HOPE EVERYONE HAD A DELIGHTFUL THANKSGIVING!!!
and ate lots of yummy food...Geez, I can't believe the rest
of this seasons festivities are only a couple weeks away...we
snuck away for the holiday to bEAUtiful Puerta Vallerta (photos HERE!)
and had plenty of time to think about all the thinks we're thankful for.
On a somewhat related note, my friends at Treatzone "tagged" me and
I was asked to blog 5 unimportant things that make me happy. And as
we all know, it's often the "unimportant" things that matter most.

Here's five that have struck me lately:
1. Stomping fall leaves on the sidewalk.
2. Finishing a good book!
3. The "characters" on the streets of San Francisco ( I swear
I saw a warrior straight out of Mad Max the other day!)
4. Bright yellow.
5. Souvineers from Mexico & the comforts of home.

Okay, okay so I know that's officially six, but I didn't want to choose.

PBS is conducting a poll on whether or not Sarah Palin is a qualified VP candidate. Thru some loophole, in which people could initially vote multiple times, the "yes" response is in the lead. I know in my heart of hearts that this is not the case and that this is not the general consensus. But PBS will report these results and in turn it will be picked up by the mainstream media...sad to say, but that this is bound to have an impact on undecided voters.

So please vote here...

Usually I'm pretty amused at designer ripoffs but it's funny how quickly feelings change when I spring for something and then a rip off appears! With my first paycheck at my "grownup" job, I bought myself a jacket I REALLY wanted from a designer brand that shall remain nameless...Well low and behold but what did I see at my last visit to Forever 21 but the spittin image of my good ole favorite jacket. It's amazing what they can get away with as far a copying...from the pointielle cotton fabric to the sherpa lining to the double breasted buttons to the appulets on the shoulder. Hopefully the quality of the designer version will outlive the Forever 21 version but only time will tell. Although I will admit that I must have gotten, by my count, at least $800 worth of use out of mine by wearing it nearly every day for the last year and a half :)
And now everyone can enjoy it...

The lovely Paramount in Oakland is hosting classic movie nights in their GORGEOUS, historic, art deco theatre!

Tonight is Cool Hand Luke starring the late, great Paul Newman (sniff.)
Doors open at 7pm so you can enjoy a cocktail before the show
and movie begins at 8pm with Wurlitzer organ accompaniment and
a cartoon reel to start the show...just like old timey times.

What are you doing this weekend? Well today's the perfect time to go visit your local pumpkin patch!!! We made a trip to Half Moon Bay near San Francisco last weekend to go pumpkin shopping and it was such a nice experience! There's got to be a dozen or so within super close proximity and they all have eye catching sights and fun, kitschy events to get you to stop, like haunted houses, gigantic pumpkins, mazes & hay rides.
Super cheap plus you've got to figure you're supporting local growers rather than big supermarket chains! yay! Not to mention it's super fun & cute and what better way to get you in the spirit of the season! Some notables were Lemos Farm, Farmer John's, Pumpkin Depot and Arata Farm. You can take a peek at some of our pictures here!

I've been super obsessed with vintage typewriters lately. I love old technology and they're SO lovely to look at. I picked my first for two dollars at a church thrift store. It's a pretty little turquoise blue Royal.

But my latest acquisition is this, I LOve it! CURSIVE!!! WhAt!*?!! Who knew? It makes me SO happy! I want to write zillions of love letters...

quick peek after work, which I did just the other day...

Right now there are two exhibits I'm pretty excited about showing thru
mid/late September.
Frida Kahlo exhibit runs thru Sept. 28
& Lee Miller photo exhibit thru Sept. 14

The Frida Kahlo exhibit is awesome! It's strangely personal and sometimes
uncomfortable to look at. I highly recommend reading the commentary of
her life that coincides with the paintings in that particular gallery. I love the
flat folk arty quality of her work. The painting above is a self portrait of
herself and Diego Rivera that is a part of the MOMA's permanent collection.
It reminds me of a freak show banner which is why I LOVE it!!!

Secondly, a photo exhibit of Lee Miller. A
Vogue model turned war photographer from
the 20s/30s/40s that was pretty intense.
Her life was so full of contrasts from model,
to muse of artists such as Manray & Picasso
to startling images of the holocost. I can only
imagine how drastically her life was effected
from all the things she'd seen.

In New York the Department of Transportation, and art gallery Pace
Wildenstein, have installed nine temporary bike racks designed by the
musician and biking enthusiast David Byrne intended to promote and
bring attention to bicycling...too bad they're only temporary but they
sure are happy :)

it's a small world

oH! So sad! In an attempt to visit Disneyland I learned of all sorts
of bad news. Not only is It's a Small World closed but they are in the
process of a "remodel"in which they will remove some of the original
whimsical Mary Blair characters, including the "rainforest" scene above
and incorporating new, yucky, disney characters. Poo.

*Just in case you didn't know, It's a Small World was designed by one of
my all time favorite illustrators Mary Blair and was originally a part of the
1964/1965 New York World's Fair. For a nerdy nostalgia buff like me that's
a pretty amazing combo!

Haha. I'm back from Portland...As always it was super fun! I have to keep reminding myself that the weather gets crummy there cuz everytime I visit it's beautiful! Tempting, very tempting...
I got to visit all sorts of areas/neighborhoods that I was relatively unfamiliar with, despite having lived there briefly and visiting many, many times.

Here's some neighborhoody highlights...

Sellwood - antiques district & the legendary oaks park
NE Alberta - yummy breakfast spots & art gallerys galore
N Mississippi - cute vintage stores, boutiques, cafes & comfort food
Mt. Tabor Park - pretty, lush park with views of Mt. Hood

Recently went to Japan and am still suffering from withdrawl.

This is so cool...

Lotte Reiniger is a turn of the century stop motion animator
from Germany,influenced by the Chinese art of silhouette
puppetry. The animation technique Reiniger invented involved
manipulated cutouts made from cardboard and thin sheets of
lead under a camera.

Her film The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) is the oldest
surviving animated feature film. Which has been restored and
is available here.

Serious. This is my new happy place. I never knew it was so great!
Filled with all sorts of wild animal animatronics and a positive message
about saving rainforests. Did I mention it rains inside! What!*?
The animatronics are more advanced than the days of old, with sensors
so they scare the b'jeebus out of you. Seriously I almost jumped out of
my skin when a black panther turned toward me as I walked by...and bat
eyes mysteriously appeared from a cave wall. So seriously, run, walk to
your local mall or tourist trap and spend some time at the Rainforest Cafe.

As many of you may know... Polaroid has discontinued their line of instant cameras and now its line of instant film. What this means for us is that if no one picks up where they left off the film will likely run out sometime in 2009...This is FOREVER people, no more silly fun and instant old timey gratification.

I watched Dave Chappelle on Inside the Actor's Studio this weekend. I guess it's an older interview from 2006 but I had never seen it. That guy is my hero! Seriously, I laughed, I cried, I was a mess...he has got to be one of the smartest, funniest, most sincere people in the world. It was SO GOOD! Check Bravo for your local listings. Worth mentioning is that surprisingly, IKEA rulezzzz for dinner and probably other meals too for that matter. I know that sounds crazy but it is SO GOOD and cheap to boot!!! Despite the bland cafeteria appearance and my traumatic experiences with Swedish meatballs as I child, I LOVE it! Their Greek Salad has the BEST dressing I've ever had. I crave that stuff if it's been too long. Not to mention how D'licious their Mac & Cheese is, and I've had some pretty fancy Mac & Cheese. Oh ya, and did I mention it's 99c and comes with a little soft drink (or ice tea). Gabe's a fan of the aforementioned meatball plate with lingonberry sauce and fries as well as the two chicken dishes they offer and lately he's tempted by the prime rib. Seriously, you can get a meal for two with tons of side for $10-$15 it's ridiculous.

Granted, I think factor in cost when it comes to food yumminess.
So by all means, don't trust me and read some other reviews here.

We trekked it in the rain last weekend to the Burlingame Pez Museum, just past the San Francisco airport. Quaint as it was, it was definitely worth the trip! I'm a fan of vintage toys and for $3 you got an informative guided tour down pez memory lane. The owner is super funny and very excitable about his collection. We were in the gift shop for a bit and heard the story repeated 3 x's but it was told with genuine enthusiasm each time! Definitely worth the visit if you're tempted to make it!

Change is such a waste of space, but what do you do? Spend countless hours rolling change into those impossible little paper tubes or do you go to one of those machines that eat up 10 cents of every dollar.

I was so happy to find out that Coinstar has changed it's ways and now you can rid yourself of troublesome coins with no charge!!! The only catch is that you get gift certificates rather than cash...but they're GOOD gift certificates!!! Who wouldn't want an Amazon gift card rather than a milk jug of pennies. Surely not me ;)

The 2005 Sofia Rose is a refreshing, dry wine with a lovely pink hue and perfume that alternates between sun-warmed rose petals and just picked strawberries. Black cherry, raspberry and strawberry flavors share the palate with a vibrant acidity.

My new drink of choice! This yummy wine is SOOO pretty. It's a bit strange for me to be so smitten by a wine. But I love everything about it!
The beautiful rose hue, the sleek shaped bottle and feminine label. Oh yes, and it's super delicious as well. Not as dry as a red wine and not syrupy sweet like some white wines. It's the perfect balance.

Made in Francis Ford Coppela's vinyared in Napa
and made with love for his daughter...how sweet!

A little hard to come by, but well worth the search...
Try your local BevMo, that's where I hit the jackpot.

friday nights at the de young

On Friday Nights, the entire museum stays open until 8:45 p.m. offering a variety of interdisciplinary arts programs, including live music, poetry, films, dance, tours, and lectures. The cafe and a no-host cocktail bar are open for dinner and drinks. There are hands-on art-making activities available for children and adults.

This is exactly the kind of classy, grownup events that I want to start attending in this new year...cocktails and jazz at a museum, how sophisticated!!! haha.

I'm excited. Friday nights at the De Young begins January 18th!!!

Bought myself a holiday gift, I've wanted these forever and was so sad to never of had one done as a child. If you're in the same boat, not to fear, Karl Johnson at cutarts is an extremely talented, second generation silhouette artist. The small size bust is $25 and custom made frames are $15. He also does pet silhouette portraits. And he's even nice enough not to date it, if you want to live with the delusion that you've had since you were a child. Classic! I love it!!!
